Spider Kitten

Spider Kitten – Behold Mountain, Hail Sea, Venerate Sky, Bow Before Tree

Stoner Rock, Doom, Sludge, Experimental

Newport, UK

My award of best name for an EP has to go to Spider Kitten. ‘Behold Mountain, Hail Sea, Venerate Sky, Bow Before Tree’ is the fucking amazing title for their blistering little 3-track sludge epic and I don’t think I have ever heard of anything more fitting. This record feels like a saga. It is the trail to doom we all must face, it is Beowulf’s dying wish.

First we must behold the Mountain. This mountain is a ridiculously thick and crunchy bass and guitar tone. that rings like a war horn, a beacon of arms throughout the EP. When it comes to sludge, Spider Kitten have got it down. The bass fills everything but never overbears it, it is masterfully balanced.
Now we come to hail the Sea. This sea is the unrelenting might of the drums. The scatter, slow and punishing. Crashes that spill out with the force of a tide—a snare that snaps you against rocks, a kick that’ll shipwreck you. The drums just fit amazingly, like heralds of doom. A tide pulling back before a tsunami.

Then we venerate the sky. The sky is the reprieves of ambient atmospherics that punctuate the tracks. Swelling notes that sweep and pan throughout the EP, cutting through the sludge and doom as light puncturing cloud. This ambience fills the picture, lending an almost Scandinavian flavour to the mix. There is something primal that is sparked by the dichotomy of sludge and atmospherics Spider Kitten has produced.

Finally, we bow to the tree. The tree is the perfectly matched vocals—that swell inside your head, almost ritual, stretched out into sweet growls. As soon as the first lines kick in you know that no other voice would work here. It is a call to gods that have forgotten us. A lament for the end times.
Once all of this has been done, it is time to move on, to new and bolder sands. Spider Kitten will happily provide. They have been incredibly busy and there is so much more to explore once you are finished here. So go, listen to Spider Kitten.
Our doom comes.
